Five Things You Should Know About Online ACLS Training

Advanced cardiac life support, or ACLS training (online or otherwise) is an important tool for healthcare professionals. ACLS algorithms provide a strategic plan to provide urgent care to an individual suffering from sudden cardiac arrest.

Dr. Michael Huckabee, PhD, PA-C, director of the Physician Assistant Program and professor of Physician Assistant Studies at Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska, offered the following information about ACLS basics – here are five things you should know before enrolling in online ACLS training:

  • ACLS is beneficial for all healthcare professionals. ACLS procedures require someone with a background in healthcare, training in basic life saving skills, and knowledge of emergency medications. ACLS courses are taught at a level understood by an array of healthcare providers, including physicians, nurses, physician assistants and first responders.
  • ACLS is effective and practical.  ACLS includes protocol for treating adults suffering compromised circulation, which may keep oxygen from being delivered to the body.  Different certifications also exist for similar types of procedures for pediatric and neonatal victims.
  • ACLS saves lives.  ACLS algorithms detail the steps needed in an emergency situation by incorporating straightforward protocols. ACLS protocols lead to fast responses and actions that assist in saving a patient who may not have survived without treatment.
  • ACLS takes a team approach.  All members of an emergency response team must work together, communicate effectively and know their roles to ensure a successful ACLS rescue. While ACLS can be initiated by an individual when necessary, it is most effectively performed as a team. The patient will benefit when more than one person is involved.
  • ACLS standards are research-based and continually updated. The science on which ACLS protocols are based is reviewed every five years to ensure that patients will receive the best and most effective care. ACLS protocols were recently updated in October 2010 and incorporated into Health Education Solutions courses in the first quarter of 2011.
